What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an innovative new way to straighten your teeth and an alternative to other teeth-straightening treatments like braces.
The big differences are that Invisalign doesn’t use metal or wires and isn’t permanently fixed to your teeth. Instead, the system includes a series of clear plastic aligners that you wear over your teeth and can take out anytime.
At All Bright Dental, the team takes digital impressions of your mouth and uses them to make images that they can manipulate to predict the movement of your teeth. This process makes treatment with Invisalign more fine-tuned and predictable than treatment with traditional braces.
The digital images are used to design your aligners so that they fit over your teeth perfectly. You must wear your aligners for at least 20 hours of the day every day and progress to wearing the subsequent aligners after one or two weeks.
Each aligner places gentle pressure on your teeth to guide them to their new position. Following your dentist’s instructions about when to change aligners helps you stay on track with your treatment plan.
What can Invisalign treat?
Invisalign treats all common alignment issues. If you’re a teenager or an adult, Invisalign can straighten your teeth to correct these bite abnormalities:
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Crossbite
- Teeth crowding
- Gaps and spaces
Your dentist examines the positions of your teeth and the way they fit together to help you decide if Invisalign is necessary. If your teeth are drastically misaligned, traditional braces may still be the better choice for at least part of your treatment.
How should I care for my Invisalign aligners?
Part of your treatment with Invisalign is caring for your aligners and keeping them clean. Thankfully, having the ability to take your aligners out makes this easy. To care for your aligners and avoid complications with your treatment, you should:
- Use lukewarm water to clean your aligners
- Use the Invisalign cleaning system or a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean them
- Take your aligners out when you eat
- Brush your teeth after every meal or snack
- Let your dentist know right away if you lose or break an aligner
With Invisalign, you don’t have to restrict your diet as you would with traditional braces. However, you must make sure both your teeth and the aligners are clean each time you finish eating.
