When to Consider a Dental Crown After a Root Canal

When to Consider a Dental Crown After a Root Canal

Our teeth are very curious things: they contain the hardest substance in our body (enamel), and we grow two sets of them (baby teeth and adult teeth). But despite our teeth having the hardest substance our body produces, it doesn’t always protect us from the numerous dental problems that millions of Americans deal with.

Many dental problems can lead to a root canal, including tooth decay, infection, and gum disease. The procedure involves removing the pulp and nerve inside the tooth to save it. Dental crowns are often added to protect a tooth after a root canal. But is a crown always needed? And how long should you wait after a root canal before the crown is placed?

If you live in the Mamaroneck, New York, or Stamford, Connecticut, area and need a root canal, dental crown, or other dental work, Dr. Gennadiy Kravets and his dedicated medical team at All Bright Dental can help.

What is a dental crown?

When your teeth are damaged, infected, or compromised, a dental crown can improve your oral health. They can restore severely worn or broken teeth, attach to dental bridges, or cover discolored or misshapen teeth. They are also used to protect a tooth after a root canal.

Crowns are often made from metal, ceramic, resin, or porcelain. You can also get overlays or ¾ crowns to cover damage that doesn’t require as much tooth shaping and shaving.

Should you get a crown after a root canal?

It depends on where the tooth is and the amount of damage. A crown is usually suggested for molars and premolars. Otherwise, it is usually an aesthetic decision. If the tooth hasn’t experienced significant decay, often a filling is enough to protect it. Every situation is different, including healing times and the health of the affected tooth. Mild discomfort after a root canal is common but can often be managed with over-the-counter medication.

How long does it take to get a crown?

If you need a crown, there is a wait time while it is being created by the dental lab. It usually takes up to two weeks. So, during the wait, make sure to practice optimal dental hygiene and eat soft foods to avoid inflaming the affected area. Excellent dental hygiene will also be necessary after the crown is placed, as well as avoiding hard foods that can cause it to crack.
